BURNT

Directed by Karina Hurtado, Van Lier Media Fellowship recipient
Media Educator: Todd Chandler
Burnt follows two sets of friends, parallel conversations as they walk through the streets New York City on their way to meet each other. Vivi and Danny are lovers. Alex and Carol are their friends who are concerned about Dani, who self-mutilates by burning herself. The pairs of friends, traveling separately, are unknowingly in dialogue with each other as they discuss their fears, frustrations. The story is complex and layered and resists simply pathologizing the main character’s behavior. Rather, it seeks to understand it by understanding the emotional context, family history, and relationships. Burnt was directed by Karina Hurtado when she was 17 years old and attending the International Baccalaureate School for Global Education in Long Island City, Queens. As a dedicated member of group projects at Global Action Project, she received a Van Lier fellowship to create her own work, with the guidance and support of a media educator, over the course of a six month program. She is currently in her third year at Mt. Holyoke College in Western Massachusetts. She continues to make videos.
